Being big fans in the industry, we are sometimes asked about our favorite style of wall clock. This is not an easy answer, especially with all the newer ones that are available. Some years ago, before our website even existed, it would have been much simpler to answer. But, now, there are many types of clocks in materials ranging from wood to metal to more modern cast styles. These ones can capture the essence of earlier traditions without the weight or issues with mechanical functions.
However, if really pressed on the point, it would have to be the wood wall clocks that take the cake. These are just so much a part of the history of these beauties that we have to vote for them. There is just something special about a wood clock; the way it looks, the richness, the charm and even the mechanical aspect to how it operates. While it may not win any awards for accuracy, like an atomic clock might, it certainly wins our hearts. Trying to imagine what these clocks might have ‘witnessed’ in the homes of so many of our ancestors from homes overseas to their migration here must be quite a story.
Many of the famous wall clock designers and manufacturers here are from overseas. The European makers with their traditions and skilled craftsman are all but a dying breed. We just don’t value that type of attention to detail that we once did. Sure, there are still collectors and fans of the hand made quality of these fine clocks, but the depth of their reach is shrinking. Blame it on cell phones, home appliances or any other digital device with a clock on it, no matter how you slice it, wall clocks of old are just not as popular as they once were. However, with the surge in popularity of the more modern types of clock styles, there may be a resurgence in these beauties after all. With resins, metals and other materials from which newer wall clocks are made, we may have already witnessed the height of wood as the top choice for clocks in our homes.
