The rule that I try to follow is to keep looking at the slope and the glacier and thinking to myself: “what will be the consequence if I slip here?” If it seems to me that the worst that will happen is I will fall or slide a short distance to a gully, then I don’t worry. But once I start to think that I could slide right down a steep slope, then I get out my ice axe and switch. I am far from perfect in this regard but I do think that many accidents could be avoided if more people did the same. The reason many do not is because they often have quite short technical ice axes. These are great for really steep ascents but are a lot less useful when it comes to cross glaciers and the like because they are just a bit too short to be comfortable. So even though there is a trend towards using much shorter tools these days, I’m still in favour of the idea of using a fairly long alpine ice axe that is good for most uses.

The biggest advantage of a snow pusher is that it requires minimum help from you. All you have to do is push it – and you don’t even have to go hard at it, because the entire load is transferred to the wheels, which do all the work. So you won’t be straining your muscles in any way. Also, these snow pushers are very friendly towards the environment and help you reduce your carbon footprint. You may be wondering how this is so. Well, they do not run on any kind of fuel, in fact they do not even use electricity. It’s just a ridiculously simple machine that needs little or no maintenance, and is a great investment for the long run.

So don’t suffer with snow anymore. Walk into your nearest departmental store, enquire about the snow pushers available, find out which features you can get, how much it will cost, and go ahead and buy one. Even if you don’t feel like shoveling snow, you can sit inside and relax, and get your kids to do the job for you – they will really enjoy pushing the machine around! And the best thing is that you can completely trust your children around them – they will be safe, because there are no dangerous parts or safety hazards to the snow pusher.

The first thing that you will want to make sure your backpack has is a lot of storage space. You will want to make sure that you have plenty of space to store the Tupperware dishes that you will need to place inside. The way in which any branches are going to be removed from the tree is very important, this is specially so since the advent and availability of different types of power saw. The problem with the power saw is that the can be proved to be of excellent value in the hands of a professional, but can really start to cause problems when an amateur tries to use them. For a start, a chainsaw makes light work of most woodcutting once the chain is sharpened and these saws are therefore very easy to use. This means that because there is very little physical effort in the act of cutting into a branch, many branches will be cut unnecessarily. This in effect means that the tree surgeon must stand back and make a careful assessment of exactly which branches and limbs are going to be removed from the tree before the chainsaw is applied. Hasty decisions should not be made. It is very easy to go back afterwards and take a further limb off the tree, it’s impossible to replace a limb.

Another reason for removing limbs from trees is to allow for Forest access. Usually, Forest access paths are needed once the trees have closed in sufficiently to prevent anyone from accessing anything but the outside trees. Forestry inspection paths are created at this stage to open up a grid of walkways through the forest. These are usually placed 100 meters apart and allow the inspecting forester to be able to survey the forest very thoroughly.

It is that time of year again – Autumn – where all the leaves are falling from the trees and covering the ground in a blanket of golds and yellows. Unfortunately though it won’t last for long, and they will quickly turn into layers of slipper brown mush. Fallen leaves really can cause a lot of problems and present a lot of dangers. It is however (I hope) always going to happen, so the only thing that we can do is to effectively manage the harm and dangers fall leaves do, to create a safer environment. One of the ways to do this is to collect up the leaves using a lawn sweeper. These devices with their rotating brushes quickly collect and gather in a bag all of the fallen leaves.

Far better than the way a bug zapper works by simply electrocuting any flying insect that happens to cross its path, the trap is more selective.  Well, not so much in the sense that it ‘knows’ which bug to target as it is designed to target a specific insect – those darn mosquitoes.  We’ve discussed the issues with bug zappers in another article on our site, so we’ll leave that discussion there to focus on the mosquito trap.

These traps are really quite ingenious.  What they do is employ scent and other agents that specifically attract mosquitoes to lure them closer and closer until they are drawn into the unit and killed.  The carbon dioxide and humidity that we humans (and other animals) emit is attractive to these pesky buggers.  Beyond just trying to electrocute them with a bug zapper, the mosquito trap aims to select for these types of bugs.  A zapper will simply, non-selectively kill any insect that comes in contact with the screen.  Not many mosquitoes end up dying this way, so it is poor in the efficient department.  Mosquito traps are much more selective and specific at trapping the ones you are after.

Are there any other ways of lowering the mosquito problems in your yard or patio?  Yes, there are.  The main thing to consider at all times is to use the best of integrated pest management ideas.  What this means is that you are not only killing the ones that are flying around biting everyone, but attempting to eliminate the ones that have not been hatched yet.  This includes practices like eliminating standing water on your property and sitting waste.  Fountains can be alright as they usually have moving water.  Moving water is not as much of a concern as water that may be sitting in a pot or basin somewhere not usually visited.  This would be a prime location for mosquito breeding and hatching.  If you follow these practices, you should notice a drop in your scratching problem and the need to use your mosquito traps as well.

Some of the things I always carry in my fishing tackle box are: a utility knife for different purposes, a file to keep the knife sharp and to work with hooks, pliers I use to cut the lines, a first aid kit and sunscreen to avoid excessive sun exposure damage.

You will notice that these items are not directly or exclusively related to bass fishing, but without them you may not be prepared for your trip!

The best way to avoid this is to take them down quickly when the wind gets up. The smaller retractable motorhome awnings can be folded up in a few minutes, which is a big bonus. The problems start with the big annex designs. These are more sturdy and strong, but there will come a time when things just get too rough for them. Act quickly but don’t panic, and get as many people as you can to help take it down. The faster you are, the less damage will be done.

We recently got another batch of kayaks in at the shop, and this time, we are going to put the Ocean Kayak lineup through the ringer.
